This concept was introduced in Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender. Bringing us the tale of Avatar Aang who lay in frozen slumber for 100 years opened us to the world of Avatar. What we learned was that Aang was far from the first Avatar, being the reincarnation of hundreds of past lives. They are the bridge between the real world and the Spirit World. They are the only ones who can learn and master all four elements and bending arts. Those who are chosen to bring about the spirit of balance are tasked with protecting the world from all evil and maintaining peace in the world. To be the Avatar is an extraordinary honor and responsibility.
